LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Our Arleta Winter Bazaar is coming up Saturday! Our school secretary Nicole told me that her own 4th grader, who attends a different school, is still talking about last year’s Arleta Winter Bazaar and how amazing he thinks Arleta students are because of the incredible things they created and because the whole event felt so special, festive and fun. Come enjoy and add to children’s joy! 11-2 in the Cafeteria. The Book Fair will be open in the library, too!
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Family-Teacher conferences last week! It was amazing to feel, see and hear our school filling up with meaningful staff-family partnership. Some of you weren’t able to make it yet; please reach out to your child’s teacher to reschedule. By attending this conference you ensure your child knows you’re connected and talking to their teachers and staff, which is a powerful way to improve their learning and overall experience at school. Staff can already see improvements from families having learned certain things were or were not happening as they’d thought! Thank you all for that very appreciated support! And, thank you so much to all the parents who made such an incredible meal and experience for our staff to enjoy together. I walked in our staff room about 4:30 to see pretty much every one of our certified staff members seated at beautifully adorned tables and smiling as they ate, talked and had a quick minute to rest. Thank you so much!
If you clicked the Successful Schools Survey link Nicole sent mid-week- you helped almost double our response rate! We’re still 16 away from last year’s total though, which we are really hoping to greatly surpass to ensure our results are representative of our community. Please share your perspectives to help us improve: our School Climate Team and Instructional Leadership Teams use your responses to write our school climate goal and specific actions to take. For example, our goal is to improve a sense of belonging for all of our students. One of our strategies is to utilize our new Social Emotional Learning Resource, Caring School Community. A component is Cross-Age Buddies, and after Cross-Age Buddy experiences (ie, each 1st grade class is paired up with a 4th grade class and has monthly activities together), we use an assessment tool to analyze whether buddies are engaged in talking and listening to each other, acting in caring ways toward one another, to then practice and plan for our next cross-age buddy experience. The survey gives you a chance to share how various activities we implement at school are working for your child.
Request / Reminder for our families who walk their dogs to school for arrival or dismissal: Please do not bring your dog along with you if the dog could get elevated and bark or lunge. Dogs are to be kept on the perimeter of campus. Dogs should not be brought into the line for SUN pick up.
In closing, I’m deeply saddened to share that the family of one of our students has experienced a heartbreaking loss. Here is the link for donations being raised for our student's uncle and cousin shared by his mom... who expressed her deepest appreciation for the care she feels in our community and for any possible donations. gofundme link. Our student’s mom asked to also share the message of the seriousness of mental health and how important it is to watch the signs of loved ones and to check on them often so they feel supported in dark times. "Although my sister-in-law lost her life to fentanyl she was also really struggling mentally."
Thank you for each of your part in the many different and vital ways we come together in support of each other.

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR SCHOLASTIC BOOKFAIR
The Arleta School Book Fair is currently running now through Saturday. We've had an amazing volunteer turn out. Thank you so much to all the Arleta parents making it happen!
We still have two slots open. If you are able to help out during the Winter Bazaar, or especially if you are available on Saturday to help pack up the book fair after it closes at the end of the Winter Bazaar we could still use your help. Sign up following this link to Signup Genius!
UPDATED! SEASON OF GIVING IS UPON US
Every year our Arleta Counselors, SUN Program and PTA Inclusion Committee team up to rally our community to raise funds in support of Arleta families. Gift cards will be purchased to directly support families for holiday meals, gifts or fulfill whatever their needs are. Our fundraising goal is $2,700 so that each family receives $150. So far we've raised $742.
Donations can be made via venmo to @Audrienne-Manansala (school counselor), or bring cash, check or unused gift cards to the office for Ms. Aud by Friday, December 13th at 3pm. Please give generously!
SHARE-A-TOY DRIVE THROUGH DEC 13
SUN, in partnership with the PTA Inclusion Committee, is hosting the 3rd annual toy drive to provide families an opportunity to come select holiday gifts before the winter break. We are seeking donations of new or excellent condition toys to include in the toy drive.
Check your kid's room for those forgotten or unused toys, or purchase something from one of our local shops like Hammer + Jacks or Red Castle Games, then bring it to the office by December 13th. Email melissasircy@gmail.com with any questions. Thanks for your support!
If you would like to shop the Toy Drive for your family Dec 16-20, set up an appointment with Raina Bilbrew at rbilbrew@pps.net.

THERE'S STILL TIME TO SIGN UP FOR OBOB THROUGH DEC 15TH
There's still time for your child to join an Oregon Battle of the Books team! Children competing in Oregon Battle of the Books read select books from the OBOB booklist, and compete in teams to answer questions in matches that pit their knowledge of the story against teams in other schools.
If your child is interested in joining this free competitive book trivia tournament, you can sign them up with this link. If you are unsure or have questions about OBOB, there will be an information session on December 12th at 2:45PM that you are welcome to attend. Or, you can send questions to areltaobob@gmail.com.
You can find the list of books here! Practice matches (pool play) will be held during the school day on Thursdays during the OBOB season instead of after school. By doing so, we hope this allows many more students the flexibility to participate. Books are available at the school library but you can click here to see the books on the Multnomah County Library website, including audiobooks. To go to the Arleta OBOB website, click here!
Registration will be extended to December 15th and a new schedule will be sent out afterwards.

VOLUNTEER NEED SPOTLIGHT
VOLUNTEER FOR THE ARLETA WEBSITE
Arleta PTA's website helps parents connect to programs and keeps us all updated on events and resources at the school. But did you know it's run by parent volunteers? We need a new volunteer to upload flyers and information to our GoDaddy website. Knowledge of html or other web languages is not necessary but some familiarity with website building software is a plus (though not a requirement) and the tasks take about 30-45 minutes once a week. This is a way to help Arleta from the comfort of your home! Our outgoing volunteer Sheryl Moren will train you.
To volunteer please email the PTA by clicking the button below.
SCHOOL NEWS
SUCCESSFUL SCHOOLS SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED TO DEC 9
The Successful Schools Survey is an opportunity for students, staff, and families to provide important feedback on their school environments, learning experiences, and sense of well-being and safety at school.
We've had just 16 fewer responses this year compared to last year, and we want to make sure that more Arleta families get to weigh in.
The survey is conducted once every school year to provide timely information to schools, district leadership, and the community, allowing us to make informed decisions about school climate and culture. The survey closes Monday, December 9.
You can complete the Successful Schools Survey online using the link provided below. Please complete one survey per household. If you have more than one student at PPS, we ask that you complete the survey considering the experiences of your eldest child. The survey will take approximately 15-30 minutes to complete and is available in English, Spanish, Russian, Somali, Vietnamese and Chinese.

Arleta's Winter Bazaar on Dec 7th is a highlight of the year, bringing everyone together to showcase our kids' creativity and enjoy a little magic of the season. But we need parent participation in a couple of ways:
We need parent volunteers to help make the event happen. We especially still need help setting up and cleaning up the event!
We also need help making delicious things for the bake sale. Have a recipe you're proud of? Sign up by clicking the button below!
Let’s come together to make this event one to remember. Thanks for supporting Arleta Elementary!
