MLC Weekly News and Notes 2024-25
November 11th-15th
Hello, MLC Community. Here we are right in the middle of "No School November" with a reminder there is no school Monday 11/11 for Veterans Day.
Please make sure to sign up for parent/teacher conferences! The link is HERE as well as on our website. We ask that families only sign up for ONE family slot per teacher so there is enough room for all families to get an opportunity to meet.
HERE is the November monthly resource newsletter from our social worker Clement. It is a great place to find school and community resources that could benefit you and your family. It includes announcements about relevant events and opportunities, basic needs support, mental health support, and much more.
Lastly, as our country is going through post election times, we want to remain clear on where our school values stand. Our highest priority at MLC as an inclusive community is to facilitate the intellectual and emotional growth of our students in a safe, compassionate, and rigorous environment. Our community works together to ensure that our classrooms remain spaces of knowledge, empathy, and belonging. There is much unrest in our world. At MLC we are building a learning community of inclusivity, respect and equity. There is no place for hate at MLC.
We hope you enjoy a restful three day weekend.
Warmly,
Suezann & Darren

Holiday Meal Fundraiser
Our MLC Social Work & Counseling team in partnership with the PTSA is announcing our 4th annual Holiday Meal Fundraiser to support our MLC families in need!
If you have the means, we are asking you to consider contributing to this important cause for our community. Your donation will allow MLC families to purchase food and other necessities during the holiday season. As food prices continue to soar, the need this year continues to be high.
The past three year's drives were a HUGE success thanks to the generous support of our MLC community. The money raised has had a direct positive impact on many families in our school community. Let's make this year even better than the last!
Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy
Cell Phones are not allowed in MLC classrooms or anywhere else during class time. They will be locked in a safe zone during each class by the classroom teacher. We will be very vigilant in keeping our classrooms phone free at MLC in order to keep learning distraction free. Please make sure you are discussing with your student prior to the first day. We will have students and parent/guardian sign a no cell phone agreement at conferences for grades 6x12.

PTSA MEETING: Join us the second Wednesday of each month!
Wednesday, November 13, 6:00-7:30p.m.
MLC Library and Zoom (see MLCPTSA.org for Zoom link and agenda).
Dinner and childcare are provided for all meetings (email Sierra if you have dietary restrictions).
Join us to hear updates from MLC staff, our PTSA committees, and to discuss ways we can best support our school community this year. We will vote to reallocate our budget to provide field trip funds to each grade band (Kx5, 6x8, 9x12), maintain a general scholarship fund, and create a field trip fundraising match program.
BOTTLEDROP: Holiday Give *Fundraiser for 4x5 Class Overnight Field Trip Fund*
This holiday season, BottleDrop is running its Annual Holiday Give program, a combination of matching funds and social media contests. Our 4x5 classes will be hosting the fundraiser to raise funds for their big spring overnight field trip. We will be eligible to receive a 20% match on all deposits made with our blue bags between November 15-December 2. Start collecting your cans, bottles, and other refundables now and throughout the Thanksgiving holiday. If you’ve been saving up your bags, this will be the perfect time to get them turned in!
MLC-labeled BottleDrop blue bags are always available in the front office at MLC or other bins around school. We’ll also be handing them out several times during school drop-off and pick-up, so keep your eyes out for us. To avoid exceeding the total daily limit set by BottleDrop, we will be collecting bags on specific dates so that we can coordinate our deposits. We hope all MLC families will help support the important experiential learning that happens on the annual 4x5 spring overnight and help make this fundraiser a big success!
HOLIDAY MEAL FUND: It’s that time of year…
The Holiday Meal Fund supports members of our MLC community. Food scarcity, housing insecurity, financial stress, and other obstacles to learning are faced daily by students and their families. This fund is managed separately from the PTSA general funds. While it is not tax deductible, we are able to provide this directly to MLC families through the MLC Support Team.
Your gift will allow MLC families to purchase food and other necessities for the holiday season and throughout the year. Click HERE to donate to the MLC Holiday Meal Fund.
If you need assistance or would like to request a grocery card for your family, please submit this form to contact MLC's Social Worker Clement Wislon and the MLC Support Team.
We also want to give a huge shout out to our local Trader Joe's, who has agreed to sponsor our Meal Fund again this year with a gift card drive. Please show them some love when you're in the neighborhood!
VOLUNTEERS & DONATIONS NEEDED: PTA Clothing Center
Thursday, November 21, 9:30am-1:30pm
Marshall Campus, 3905 SE 91st, Room B-60
This past school year, the PTA Clothing Center assisted nearly 1,400 PPS students! Each PPS school is responsible for sending 5-6 volunteers twice a year to help students receive clothing and shoes, and to help sort donations so there are lots of choices for kids to see. Volunteers can be parents, grandparents or community members. They are also requesting donations of teen-adult size gently worn/new sweatshirts, hoodies, and warm coats, as well as boys pants, joggers, jeans size 4-14.
Contact Sierra with any questions or to answer this call for volunteers and donations! You can also reach out to MLC Social Worker Clement anytime to access the MLC Clothing Closet, The PTA Clothing Center, or many other resources.
CRAFT FAIRE: Registration open!
Calling all student and professional crafters! The annual MLC PTSA Craft Faire will take place Tuesday, December 10, 3:30-5:30pm. This is a treasured MLC tradition and a great opportunity to purchase gifts and goodies just in time for the holidays. Selling their own art and crafty wares helps students learn what it takes to create and make a profit from their creativity. We also welcome artist parents or community members so please spread the word to any adults who may be interested! Tables are free for students and open to non-students with a $20 donation to the PTSA.
To reserve a vendor space, sign up HERE. Students who are interested in playing live music during the celebration are welcome to sign up too! If you have any questions, please email Jeremy Booth. And if you don’t plan to be a vendor, be sure to save the date for shopping and celebrating the creativity of our MLC community!
ADVOCACY ALERT: Oregon PTA 2025 School Funding Advocacy Kick-off Event

They will share how we can all be effective advocates for our schools and children in the upcoming 2025 legislative session and there will be small-group workshops led by independent parent/community leaders on topics such as special education needs, school facilities in disrepair, and organizing Lobby Days in Salem.
