Principal's Message
Hello Duniway Families,
Happy month of November and I hope you all enjoyed a fun Halloween celebration last night. We had a good week of school that was also marked by a lot of rain. Looking ahead to next week, I know many of us are thinking about our national, state and local elections happening on Tuesday. Students will also be voting at Duniway with a range of important issues at stake such as: themes for school spirit days, name of new play structure, name of our Dragon mascot and favorite school lunch. If you would like to review our school ballot with your child, here is a PDF version: Duniway School Ballot 2024. Students in grades 3-5 will be voting electronically using a google form and students in grades 1-2 will be voting using a paper copy. Kindergarten students will be using hand raising :) Our new student council members have done a great job helping to prepare for our election and will be helping classes with out voting on Tuesday. If you would like to discuss the upcoming broader election with your child, PPS has put together this election toolkit with additional resources: PPS election toolkit-2024.
I also wanted to put a reminder that we need parents to join The Duinway Site Council (SC) which is responsible for developing, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the Duniway School Continuous Improvement Plan (SCIP). The requirements and purpose of the site council is outlined in Portland Public Schools Policy 7.10.010-P. The Duniway Site Council will meet monthly on Tuesday afternoons from 2:45-3:45pm. This is a great opportunity for those who would like to assume a parent leadership position in the school. If you are interested in joining the Site Council as a parent/guardian member, please fill out this form: Site Council Interest Form (this link was not working correctly last week and now is). If we have more than four parents interested, we will organize a vote amongst parents to choose the representatives.
Sincerely
John (aka- Dr. Melvin)

Successful Schools Survey is Now Open!
Today Portland Public Schools begins the annual Successful Schools Survey. The Successful Schools Survey is an opportunity for students, staff, and families to provide important feedback on their school environments, learning experiences, and sense of well-being and safety at school.
The survey is conducted once every school year to provide timely information to schools, district leadership, and the community, allowing us to make informed decisions about school climate and culture. This year, the survey window is open November 1 to December 6.
Portland Public Schools highly values the input and opinions of its families, and we welcome all PPS parents and guardians to complete this year’s survey. We use the data to help improve our schools, providing targeted feedback and training on how to create healthy school environments that are welcoming for all.
You can complete the Successful Schools Survey online using the link provided below. Please complete one survey per household. If you have more than one student at PPS, we ask that you complete the survey considering the experiences of your eldest child.
The survey will take approximately 15-30 minutes to complete and is available in English, Spanish, Russian, Somali, Vietnamese and Chinese.
