Beverly Cleary School

A Note from Principal Presley
What a wonderful first week of quarter three. The Cougar rep team kicked off the quarter with the theme of courage! It's always a joy to see the whole school in one place! I learned a valuable lesson that if you want to avoid being celebrated on your birthday, it's best to not have assemblies on them! One highlight is I was able to share my (or my husband's) birthday plan of attending the Blazers games for Dame's return. It was fun catching up with students on Thursday to recap the amazing outcome!
On Thursday, staff started a book study using the book Deliberate Optimism. It was great to be in community over snacks and a good read.
Tonight, many of us are dancing our way into the weekend as chaperones for the middle school dance. I'm lucky enough to get to chaperone not one but TWO dances this week. Tomorrow night, my husband and I are signed up to chaperone Wells' winter dance. Interestingly enough, it's being hosted at the same location where he had his senior prom.
Whether you'll be dancing this weekend or not, I hope you have a great weekend with family and friends!
Black History Month
One of the many ways we will be celebrating Black History Month here at BCS this February will be through this collaborative bulletin board. One of our amazing 8th grade students drew out the face for this display and we have begun collecting names from students all over the school on who they would like to see added to the board. It has been incredible to see students light up as they think about the Black folks in their life that they look up to and that inspire them. We have asked all classes to send over names and we will be adding to this beautiful women’s “afro” all month long.
Middle School Bake Sale Fundraiser
In the leadership elective, a few middle schoolers have worked together to organize a bake sale to raise money for The Trevor Project.
The bake sale will take place on the upcoming Monday, February 5th, and Tuesday, February 6th, at 3:00 o’clock on the Blacktop.
There will be an assortment of pastries, from cookies to cupcakes, all store-bought and donated, for only a few dollars, cash only, please.
Thank you to our donors for the bake sale, Fluer De Lis Bakery & Cafe and Pip’s Original Donuts & Chai.
Don’t forget to enter the raffle at the table for a Pip’s Donuts gift certificate.
So, join us at a student-led bake sale fundraiser next week!
Lunch Reminders
There has been an increase of students ordering food to be delivered during lunch. We would like to remind families that we do not accept food deliveries from outside vendors. We understand that students forget their lunches; we welcome families dropping off lunch or they will be provided a healthy lunch from the school kitchen.
We would also like to request students bring a cold lunch or bring warm items in a thermos. We only have one microwave and the wait to warm food has nearly reached the time given to eat. We want to make sure students maximize their lunch and fill their bellies!
Immunization Exclusion Day
Dear Parent/Guardian,
PPS is required to ensure that all students are up to date on all school-required immunizations, or have a signed medical exemption letter signed by a licensed physician or a non-medical exemption, by Wednesday, February 21, 2024 (“Exclusion Day”). Immunizations are required by state law for children and students in attendance at public and private schools, preschools, childcare facilities and Head Start programs in Oregon.
On February 7th, the Multnomah County Health Department (MCHD) will mail a notification letter to all students who are due to receive one or more required vaccinations or who do not have a record of immunization. Students who do not have all their school-required vaccines or a qualifying exemption by Exclusion Day will not be allowed to attend school until their immunizations are up-to-date.
What to do if you get a letter
Call your school if you have already provided your child’s immunization record to the school and verify whether the school has a copy on file.
If your student needs updated vaccinations, get your child immunized right away. You can schedule an appointment with your child’s regular health care provider, or with:
One of the MCHD Student Health Centers. Benson High School students can call the Benson Wellness Center (OHSU).
The MCHD Immunization Clinic at 619 NW 6th Avenue, Room 150, Portland, OR. This Clinic occurs every Tuesday and Thursday 9am - 4pm, and Friday 10am - 5pm. Call 503-988-4724 for an appointment.
Bring to your child’s appointment the Certificate of Immunization Status Form that was included with the letter you received from MCHD. This Form will let the provider know what vaccinations your student still needs. If you misplace the CIS Form you received in the mail, you can request another copy from your child’s school).
Once your student has received their required vaccines, sign the completed immunization form and turn it in to your child’s school.
Thank you for keeping your student and their classmates safe, in school, and ready to learn!
