A Note from Principal Presley
The weather is finally warming up, and wahoo for that!
Teachers have been hard at work to finalize grades and get report cards ready to send home in K-5. Families should receive them in the mail early next week. Middle School families should be able to access them via ParentVue!
This week seemed to fly by as most are as of recently. Tuesday evening, PTA met to discuss the 24-25 budget, and while time intensive, it was nice to collaborate for a stronger understanding of how the PTA goals are brought to life in each part of the budget. Wednesday afternoon, Site Council met and talked about using strength/asset based ways of collecting feedback and to make refinements. A thought shared by one parent was to work alongside the community to ask and answer the question, “what are the assets of this school and community?” as well as “what are our current webs of support?”. By honing in on these things, we can better see where to leverage and utilize these for growth and even greater success. We also added a section to the website for more information about Site Council. We are still learning and growing, so we appreciate your patience. Wednesday night, I was also able to attend a listening session through the Culture in the Classroom Event at Barbie Village (turns out- it's right down the road) with the Data Drive Team I’m working with at the district level. Our focus was to listen to families share how they best receive progress reports, what types of formats work best to demonstrate understanding of skills/standards, and the frequency in which progress is shared. I was in awe of the solution-oriented thinking both students and families had. Thursday, our staff Deliberate Optimism book study met for the last time! I sure have had a great time learning from them, talking about some of the far-fetched sides of the book, and ultimately connecting it back to our community here at BCS. On a similar note, a parent reached out about possibly starting up something similar for parents. If this is something you'd be interested in, please complete this survey. You can also add any good book recommendations there as well. I've picked the brain of some staff and our counseling team for their thoughts as well. As a side note, many of you have asked about schedules and staffing next year. I will send it out when it's all finalized. The district is working hard to make that happen within the next week or two, so stay tuned!
This weekend is Community Cares Day at school! If you can, feel free to join us from 9 AM - 12 PM tomorrow! This weekend, we also are waving goodbye to our sixth graders- they head to outdoor school on Sunday for the week! In between those two events, my husband and I will be going to a Blazers game and watching the Timbers play. I’m sure we'll also have to tune in to the Masters Tournament, so I've selected Kopeka as the player I'm rooting to win. Not sure what I’d do with my time without sports! Enjoy the sunshine this weekend- it’s hard to believe quarter 4 is underway, and as usual, thanks for allowing me to be a part of such a wonderful community!
Need to Knows
Dogs on School Property during School Hours
Just a reminder, dogs are not allowed on school property during school hours. We love dogs and understand they are part of the family, but we also recongnize that some kids are nervous around dogs and the chaos during arrival and dismissal can ampilfy the energy. Woof!
In an effort to maximize eating time, we are eliminating the use of the microwave. We regularly have a long line of kids waiting to use it and it's not uncommon for students to only have a few minutes remaining of lunchtime to eat. Please send warm food in a thermos or only send food that doesn't need warming. Thanks for your support!

Library News
On Monday, Apr. 15 our kinders, 1st and 2nd graders will have the special opportunity to meet and learn from children's author, Dane Lu. She lives in Portland and has just published her second picture book, Laolao's Dumplings. Please consider purchasing a signed copy of either or both of her books through our community partner, Green Bean Books, through this link by Mon. Apr. 1, 2024. When finishing your order, select Beverly Cleary School under "Calculate Shipping Cost." The signed copies of Dane Lu's books will be delivered to your student's classroom by the day after her visit. (Your purchase of one of her books directly supports this opportunity to have an author share her writing process with our students.)
If you have back copies of National Geographic Kids magazine that your family no longer needs, we'd love to use them to study nonfiction text features. These are high-level and engaging tools for our younger students to use in our Library lessons.
Finally, if you are interested in volunteering in the Library or you have a family member who would like to help us shelve books or check in books on Friday mornings, we would love your help. Shelving books is a great way to tune out on a podcast and help our Library in a huge way.Contact our Librarians, Nancy Gilkey (ngilkey@pps.net) and Whitney Palfreyman (wpalfreyman@pps.net) if interested or just want to know more. Thanks for considering!
