The sun is out two days in a row!! This week was busy, and so many wonderful things were happening! Monday afternoon, we met as a leadership team to try and focus the MANY different teams under one umbrella. Tuesday, students participated in a fishbowl about how they engage best! They were so articulate- I can see many future teachers in the room. Greeting students in the hallway/duty and knowing specific things about them are the two areas I’m going to focus on moving forward. Tuesday night, PTA met and discussed an upcoming Parent Night Ms. Kobs has graciously volunteered to facilitate in order to help parents parent rising teens. Wednesday, principals joined in learning walks at our very own school! They were so impressed by how kind and READY to learn our students were. I wish we could have gone into every room to see grade level aligned engagement in action, but time was limited. We did, however, get to see high academic vocabulary through a Socratic Seminar (with talking blocks,too) in Ms. Barry’s room. We saw first graders absolutely dialed in (and being peppered with celebration by Ms. Hunt) in English Language Arts- they could separate, join, and switch out sounds quicker than I could even process- way to go! They saw students creating and sharing projects in Ms. Herbage’s Spanish class, and the quick transitions and routines in Mr. Lane’s room. We ended our tour with 6th graders in Ms. Edler’s room beginning to embark on a real life issue that can apply to all of us- water! This week, Site Council also met and focused on the third School Improvement Goal- Engagement! We capped off the week with Coffee Talk- the focus was neurodiversity in honor of next week. Beverly Cleary Cafeteria is in need of more reusable metal forks and spoons for our cafeteria. This practice was started by the Green Team last year, and it has been very successful in reducing our plastic waste here at school during lunches. If you have any metal forks or spoons that you are willing to donate, please drop them by the office. You can also send a monetary donation so we can make a bulk order.

On Monday, Apr. 15 our kinders, 1st and 2nd graders will have the special opportunity to meet and learn from children's author, Dane Lu. She lives in Portland and has just published her second picture book, Laolao's Dumplings. Please consider purchasing a signed copy of either or both of her books through our community partner, Green Bean Books, through this link by Mon. Apr. 1, 2024. When finishing your order, select Beverly Cleary School under "Calculate Shipping Cost." The signed copies of Dane Lu's books will be delivered to your student's classroom by the day after her visit. If you have back copies of National Geographic Kids magazine that your family no longer needs, we'd love to use them to study nonfiction text features. These are high-level and engaging tools for our younger students to use in our Library lessons.

Finally, if you are interested in volunteering in the Library or you have a family member who would like to help us shelve books or check in books on Friday mornings, we would love your help. Class listings and registration information are on our website. We have new classes this term, like electronic music and an expanded drama class, and the return of the usual favorites in music, movement, art, robotics and more, which will include new projects for returning students.

Scholarships available: Just let a school counselor or the after-school program know you need one.
